The Meadowmere Legacy

In the late 1870's General Billy Mitchell’s parents, Senator John and his wife, Harriet, began developing a 480-acre estate in western Milwaukee County, named Meadowmere. As home of one of Wisconsin’s best-known families, the Meadowmere name originated from a picturesque pond in a field near the home.

Surrounded by lush green lawns, Meadowmere is guarded by two life-size Hungarian Vizla dogs carved in marble by sculptor Salvatore Florenti Albano in Florence, Italy. Once inside, nineteen fireplaces and woodwork with mother-of-pearl inlay crafted by the best artisans from Europe are among the many treasures to be found in the mansion that once dominated the Meadowmere estate.

Purchased from the Mitchells by the Carmelite Sisters in 1924, the mansion was originally used as an orphanage for girls and was later converted to a home for the elderly. In 1976, the Mitchell Mansion was designated as a Milwaukee County Landmark.

In 1996, Premier Care Centers purchased the mansion, which is now known as Mitchell Manor. Services at Mitchell Manor include a skilled nursing home and rehabilitation center, a community based residence, adult day services, and respite care.

Premier Care Centers continues the legacy with elegant residential care apartments and community based residences throughout Wisconsin. The communities are called Meadowmere Assisted Living Apartments and evoke the strong tradition, attention to detail, comfort and elegance of the original Meadowmere estate.
